The Timothy Award will be given to the student with the best overall Christian character in the class. I Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”
On Friday, May 15th, “The CAST Party, A Celebration of the Arts” was held at Stumptown in Matthews. The evening began with the wonderful sense of community – families sitting in the park on blankets and lawn chairs, while children played games waiting for the concert to start. CAST (Covenant Arts Support Team) provided food sales of large soft pretzels and cold beverages in addition to the Italian ice. The outdoor concert began with the 5th Grade band, directed by Mrs. Megan Morton, Next the 5th Grade choir sang under the direction of Mrs. Mary Ann Foltz.
Alana Kitchun, representing the 6th Grade chorus sang a solo and then a duet with 8th Grader, Claire Weigel, under the direction of Mrs. Charlene Thomas, also under her direction, the high school drama class performed an abridged reenactment of the entire Bible. The art teachers, Mr. Josh Barkey, Mrs. Karen Ernsberger and Mrs. Jackie Weigel displayed artwork created by our students, and acknowledging publically the six lower school Youth Art Month exhibitors. Mrs. Megan Morton, directed 6th Grade Bands, followed by the Concert Band, performed separate musical pieces.
The evening concluded with a debut performance of the CDS school song performed by a combined band of the 6th and Concert Bands. In spite of the evening ending early because of rain, it was a celebration of community and the CDS fine arts. Thank you for many kind words from parents and the CDS community.

Senior, Katherine Drye is honored with an Honorable Mention for her photo, “Orchids”, at the 2009 Congressional Art Competition
Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in each Congressional District.
On Sunday, May 17th, U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick held the 9th District 2009 congressional Art Competition. With 150 pieces of art entered from private and public schools in the 9th District, only three pieces received ribbons for first, second and third place. Katherine’s photo was one of four pieces to receive a gold star indicating the place of Honorable Mention. Congratulations, Katherine!

We are looking for volunteers to join our booster board. It's a great way to serve CDS and the student athletes. Whether it's membership drive, concessions/gate, apparel sales, special events/golf, the booster could use your help and your ideas. Our next meeting is Tuesday, June 23rd. 6:30 in the HS library. Then we meet again July 28 (but we really need to you before then) Anyone who is interested should come to the meeting and see what it's all about or they can call John Stewart at 704 301 9369 if they can't make the meeting.
Top player picks Wake Forest
John Varol, a junior at Covenant Day in Matthews, has committed to play golf at Wake Forest.
Varol is ranked as one of the top juniors in the state. He finished second in the N.C. Independent Schools 3-A Athletic Association championship, shooting a 71-74 last week.
Coach Jerry Haas had been recruiting Varol for a while.
"The biggest thing for me was playing for Coach Haas, and after getting to know him I really felt comfortable and once I visited the school I knew it would be a good fit," Varol said. "I was just honored that they were even recruiting me."
What helped Varol decided were two players already on the Deacons. He played junior golf with Lee Bedford and Daniel Meggs, who are both freshmen for the Deacons.
Varol got a late start to the game, not picking up a club until he was 12. Five years later, he turned himself into one of the top golfers in the state.
"I played baseball a lot, and I just kind of converted that same swing," said Varol, who was good enough to play AAU baseball. He still plays soccer for Covenant Day and scored 52 goals the last two seasons.
He caught the golf bug while visiting his grandparents on Hilton Head Island. He soon quit baseball to focus on golf. His parents belong to Piper Glen in Charlotte, where he once shot a 65 from the back tees.
Varol said he was being recruited by North Carolina and Virginia and two Ivy League schools.
"I've really worked hard in the classroom, and the school I go to is one of the hardest in the state," Varol said. "Academics has always come first and golf second." - Winston Salem Journal
