Class of 2010

CLASS OF 2010 –rising Juniors’ “MUST DO” LIST FOR THE SUMMER from the guidance office!

1.  I challenge you to spend some time in the Word & in prayer.  One suggestion is to read the Gospel of John and the book of Philippians, journal your thoughts and take the opportunity to devote yourself to getting to know the Lord better. Continue to develop friendships that encourage you in your faith.  “Iron sharpens iron.”

2.  Go over your PLAN ACT and PSAT tests.  You have your answer sheets, test booklets and correct answers.  Spend some time examining what you missed and working on concepts or techniques that need improvement.  Your PSAT test date for the fall is Wednesday, Oct.18th, 2008.  *Some students will be taking PSAT, SAT &/or ACT prep classes over the summer.* You will need to register online next school year for the official SAT & the ACT in the winter &/or spring.  SAT: www.collegeboard.com and ACT: www.actstudent.org  Our high school code is 342532.

If you haven’t already, register with collegeboard.com so that you receive emails from them including upcoming events, SAT sample questions, and lots of others resources if you have not already done so. Go to www.kaptest.com/satquizbank to sign up for a free SAT Quiz-Bank.  Check out the resources available to you through the ACT website at www.actstudent.org. Check our CFNC.org for lots of help!

3.  Serve someone other than yourself.  We should be doing this as a way of life.  Find opportunities to volunteer at a local organization, church, summer camp, or other ministry serving the community.

4.  You must spend some time “searching” and comparing colleges so that you can familiarize yourself with the standards for admission.  As you begin to understand the admission requirements, it may help you to make better choices while in high school.  Use the websites I’ve provided to do some searches; go the guidance page of the ENEWS for a listing of the helpful websites.   A good thing to do is to visit a college website and look for their “freshmen profile”.  This will show you what their freshmen college class’ average GPA, average SAT and other averages were for their admitted freshmen for that year. It can be helpful to know that information in determining whether the school is a “fit” for you. If there are colleges nearby in which you are interested and they offer academic, fine art or athletic summer camps or other summer programs, you should look into those camps.  That is a great way to see their campus and learn more about their school.

5. Visiting colleges and universities can be a great way to get familiar with the process of college admissions as well as serve as a good motivator to finish your high school years well.  If you can physically visit them go, if not then go on the virtual tours that many colleges provide via their website(s).

6.  If you haven’t kept up with a listing of your extra-curricular activities both in and out of school, community service, awards and other honors you should get that information in one place and begin formulating your resume which will be due at the end of your junior year.

7.  The Career Direct Testing is available to each of you.  Simply email me if you would like to take this test online.
