The visitors added 5 more over the next two innings to charge ahead 8-6. Michael MacDermott held MAC scoreless the rest of the way while the CDS offense had a big 6th inning and scored 3 runs to take the lead back. The defense was stellar with CJ Beverly's spectacular diving catch securing the first win of the season for CDS. Luke LaPlant was the starting pitcher and threw 2 innings for the Lions. Michael MacDermott recorded his second win of the season shutting down the host until the last inning.
Tue 4/1 Northside H 4:00 L 6-14

Northside jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning due in large part to a few defensive errors. Northside went on to score in each inning except the 5th. The Lions hit safely 11 times and recorded 2 errors. Northside collected 11 hits. Luke LaPlant had 2 homeruns, and Leo Barcley add a single shot to lead the Lions offense. Will Dewese collected 2 hits along with Tyler Andrews who had a single and double. Notables: Team Mom came into game batting .333 but delayed the traditional Team Mom Cookie/Brownie Taste-off until later in the season. All agreed that we love our Team Mom..but this delay seemed to leave all CDS parents bewildered and looking for answers.

Fri 4/4 Westminster Catawba H 4:00 L 6-7 Game was changed to Westminster Catawba due to wet field conditions at Warner Park. The Lions took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Trailing 6-3 going into the last inning,CDS tied it up on a dramatic 3 run home run by Luke LaPlant to send it to extra innings. Westminster scored a run in the 9th inning with a towering homerun that gave them the the eventual margain of victory. Michael MacDermott scattered 6 hits in 6 innings with 3 earned runs. Luke LaPlant pitched the last 3 innings allowing 1 earned run and 6 strikeouts. Hitting stars include Luke LaPlant with 2 HRs, and collecting 4 RBI, Michael MacDermott 2-4, Tyler Andrews 2-5. Notables: Tyler Andrews, and Troy Welty, extended their consecutive game hitting streaks to six. CJ Beverly is expected to return to the lineup around April 14. Team Mom now sits batting .285 (2-7). Andrews family earns gold star for delicious cookies! Visit the Bread Basket on Monroe Rd for goodies today!
Tu 4/8 Gaston Christian H 4:00 W
4-0

The Lions earned their third victory of the season behind Will Dewese's stellar pitching performance and solid defense. Dewese pitched the first complete game of the season and also recorded the first shutout in school history. The visiting Eagle batters were limited to three hits, one walk and struck out three times over seven innings. Hitting stars for the Lions include: Tyler Andrews and Troy Welty continued their consecutive game hitting streak, which now stands at seven games. Andrews and Welty both went 2-4. Hunter Grey picked up a hit while driving in 2 runs. Leo Barcley scored twice on one hit. Luke LaPlant picked up a RBI. Notables: Hugh Duncan and Ray "Froggy" Dewese came to the game hungry expecting confectionaries, but unfortunately left shortchanged, again. The Lions begin a stretch in their game schedule that provides 6 games in 6 days (4 weekday games next week- including a makeup game with Metrolina). Lions only committed one error and left 9 runners stranded.

Fri 4/11 Greensboro Day A 5:00 W 8-7 Tyler Andrews and Leo Barcley had three hits a piece to lead the Lions to a hard fought victory vs Greensboro Day on Friday evening. Luke LaPlant added a 2 Run Home in the bottom of the second to start the offense for CDS. It remained a see-saw battle throughout most of the game until the last inning where the Lions took the go ahead lead with the score of 8-7. Yates Duncan started the game for the Lions and scattered 6 hits over 4 innings. Michael MacDermott and Luke Laplant combined to allow 6 hits and 2 runs in the last 3 innings. LaPlant picked up his 1st win of the season. Notables: Team Mom hits a home run by sending brownies with the team for the weekend. Brownies caused such a rukus on the way to the game, the team bus blew a tire near China Grove. Kudos to the girls soccer team who graciously shared their bus ride with the well mannered (Yes Maam, No Maam) baseball team to Greensboro. Duncan Palmer hit a foul ball into a few neighborhoods down the street aways.. Team Mom is batting 2-9, but we always find a way to love her in... a strange way. Can you say pies?
Sat 4/12 Wesleyan Academy A 10:00 L 1-11 The Lions fell to a strong Wesleyan Academy baseball team 11-1 on an overcast, chilly, rainy Saturday morning game. CDS collected only 4 hits in six innings of play. The Lions committed 6 errors that led to 9 unearned runs by the home team. Notables: 4 members of the Wesleyan Academy baseball team have signed with Div I schools. Thankfully, only two of them suited up for the game. Spectators and players were "treated" to some play-by-play announcing and get up and dance music at Ed Price Field on Saturday morning. Click on photo to go to weekend trivia question. Team Mom was slightly late for the game (good intentions meant a 2-10 batting average)
Sat 4/12 Forsyth Country Day A 4:00 L 0-10 The tired Lions team battled the home team from Forsyth County until the game broke wide open in the sixth inning. The Lions collected only 3 hits but played much better defensively. Yates Duncan allowed 2 earned runs over 2 2/3rds . Notables: Tyler Andrews hitting streak came to an end after recording 9 consecutive games with a base hit. He currently leads the team with 17 hits in 11 games. Duncan Palmer wins the iron man award for the weekend, catching all three games adding up to 19 innings. Palmer showed great defensive skills along with a cannon of an arm throwing out a few runners over the weekend. His mother and Team Mom arrived at the ballpark with a second batch of delicious brownies designated only for team parents. She was the unanimous vote getter for the Most Improved Parent award for the weekend. The Lions now play 4 games in 5 days with all game holding great value to the conference standings. Mr Bullard and Mr Duncan are not making strides in winning the coveted Bobo award at the end of the season. Jill Duncan continued her consecutive games attended streak by someone other than our Team Mom. Mrs Duncan has been at all 11 games this season.
Mon 4/14 Westminster Catawba H 4:00 W 12-10 In a contest played in cold and drizzle throughout, the Lions pulled out a much needed conference win, and avenged an earlier season extra inning loss to Westminster, by the score of 12-10. Led by strong hitting efforts by Michael MacDermott and Duncan Palmer with three hits apiece, the Lions pounded out a season high total of 13 hits. Duncan Palmer (2), and Luke LaPlant(7) hit timely homeruns for CDS. MacDermott had 4 RBI, and LaPlant collected 3 RBI. Tyler Andrews lined two singles to increase his team lead of 19 hits on the season. Will Dewese started for the Lions, with Jordan Dunn picking up the win and Luke LaPlant registering the save. Leo Barcley also contributed to the pitching efforts. Notables: CDS pitchers combined for a total of 15 walks and 8 strikeouts vs Westminster. Brrrrrrrrrrrrged to Warner Park
Tu 4/15 Northside A 4:30 L 2-10 The Lions squared off against conference rivals Northside Christian in sunny and mild conditions. Yates Duncan was the starting pitcher for CDS. Jordan Dunn and Taylor Clark also shared time on the mound. Poor defense reared its ugly head again in north Charlotte. The Lions committed 6 errors but made many more mental errors which led to a 10-0 victory for the host Northside Christian. Tyler Andrews, Hunter Grey and Troy Welty collected the only hits (3)for the Lions. Notables: Of the 10 runs scored by Northside, only 6 were earned runs. The answer to the weekend trivia question is a CDS school board member. Can you name her AND guess why this odd circle was showing in her back pocket?
Wed 4/16 Metrolina A 3:30 L 2-12 The Lions traveled to Indian Trail for an important conference matchup with Metrolina Academy. CDS collected 7 hits, committed 7 errors, and scored only 2 runs on the day. Metrolina pounded out 11 hits and committed 2 errors on the way to victory 12-2. The game was shortened due to the mercy rule after 4 1/3 innings. Of the 12 runs scored by Metrolina, only 3 were earned runs. Notables : Defense has been a sore spot for the coaching staff, with the Lions commiting 25 errors since last Friday nights' game vs Greensboro Day. Tyler Andrews is 6 hits shy of tying the all-time hit mark (27) in a season, which was recorded last season by Travis Jones. CJ Beverly is expected back this Friday when mid terms are released. Thanks to Joanna Andrews for bringing delightful sweets from the Bread Basket. Team Mom is 4-14 or a batting average of .285 (yawn). Lions travel to Cannon School Friday afternoon attempting to avenge an earlier loss of 14-1. Four conference games remain before the conference tournament begins on April 28. A large majority of voters of the weekend trivia contest are guessing that the pocket contained a round package of a tobacco product. More guesses and correct answer to follow.nout
Fri 4/18 Cannon School A 4:00 L 1-6

The Lions rebounded from a couple tough losses earlier in the week. Cannon struck early in the game by scoring 2 in the first inning. CDS picked up their only run in the 3rd inning scoring Will Dewese on a single by Michael MacDermott. Will Dewese was the starting pitcher and went 3 innings scattering 7 hits and giving up 3 earned runs. Luke LaPlant finished the game on the mound pitching 3 strong innings allowing 3 hits and no earned runs. The Lions committed 3 errors and left 4 runners on base. Notables: Yates Duncan went on a hitting tear recently recording 5 consecutive hits over the last 3 games. After striking out to end the streak, Yates went on to pick up another basehit before the end of the contest. Luke LaPlant lowered his ERA to a team leading 3.06. CJ Beverly was back in the lineup after a long absence. He went 1-3 with a few defensive gems to complete a terrific return. Coach Alex is in the midst of growing a baseball coach goatee as requested by the baseball parents. Look for the debut on Monday. Assistant Coach Davis is next on our list. Next up is Hickory Grove on Monday afternoon. This game was rescheduled from earlier in the season when rain came a calling on gameday. Jill Duncan continues her attendance streak for games this season- cheering Yates and the Lions baseball team during all 15 games this season. Mrs MacDermott has announced that she was fired by the CDS school board over malicious and slanderous remarks by a few baseball parents (aka DADS), claiming she was carrying skoal over the weekend in her back pocket. The editorial staff and fathers of the team retract any errors that were committed over last weekend, and will support any legislation needed to reinstate her as a CDS Board Member in good standing at CDS. All video and audio tapes of the weekend dip will be destroyed. It was only a lens cap! Our moms are the best!

Mon 4/21 Hickory Grove H 4:00 L 1-8 re-The Lions openend up a two game series with Hickory Grove with Yates Duncan starting on the mound for the Lions. Hickory Grove struck first in the top of the third scoring 3 runs. CDS scored in the bottom of the inning with a towering homerun hit by Duncan Palmer that hit the top of the concession stand in left center field (3rd of the year). That run proved to be the only offense by the Lions in seven innings of play. The defense was sharp, allowing only one error for both teams. Michael MacDermott, Luke LaPlant and CJ Beverly assisted with pitching duties. Notables: Coach Grey announced earlier in the day that the ballclub would have to wait for next year for him to unveil the team requested goatee. (excuse of a rash rang on deaf ears of those in attendance). Team Mothers backed out of a scheduled singing performance of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". Mrs MacDermott announced that the group would reschedule for the last game of the season vs Asheville Christian. Game vs Hickory Grove Tuesday starts at 4pm.
Tu 4/22 Hickory Grove A 4:00 W 10-7 Powered by homeruns by Luke Laplant and Duncan Palmer, the Lions played their best game of the season, dropping Hickory Grove 10-7. LaPlant collected 4 rbi with three hits, Palmer had 2 rbi on 2 hits and CJ Beverly scored twice while hitting safely 3 times. Michael MacDermott started the game and pitched efficiently for the Lions for 5 innings. Defense was much improved with the defense committing only 2 errors. With the score tied after 5 innings, the Lions broke it open in the top half of the last inning scoring 4 times. Luke LaPlant came in to shut down Hickory Grove allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Notables: With 8 home runs on the season, Luke Laplant is tied for the lead for homeruns in the Charlotte metro area of high school baseball teams. Duncan Plamer's 4th blast of the season, puts him in the middle of the area's best homerun hitters. Palmer has been a mainstay behind the plate this season, collecting more than 100 innings caught this season. Team Mom, Ellen Palmer and Jill Duncan get the good "Girl Scout" Award for the game by trudging thru the jungle that is behind the Hickory Grove outfield wall to fish out the homerun balls him by son Duncan and Luke LaPlant. Plans for the team party were discussed. The Bullards have offered? their house after a rousing great time last season. More info coming...Parent Award categories were announced: Most Valuable Grandmother, Best Attendance Streak, Best Confectionary Offering, Ellen Palmer Gold Glove Award, and the first annual "Froggy" Award.
Th 4/24 First Assembly A 4:00 L 5-9 After playing a great game Tuesday at Hickory Grove, the bats went silent as First Assembly beat the Lions 9-5 on a great baseball day in Concord. Yates Duncan continued with a hot bat leading the Lions with 2 htis in 3 at bats. Will Dewese started for the Lions allowing 4 runs on 4 hits over two innings. Yates Duncan pitched another two innings allowing 1 earned run. Jordan Dunn and CJ Beverly also combined for 2 innings allwoing no earned runs. Notables: Yates Duncan has assumed the team league in batting average at .429. Most of Duncan's hits have come in the second half of the season. Luke Laplant is only 5 plate appearances shy of tying Travis Jones for the career lead of 69 in a season. Luke is also two rbi short of tying David Batten's season rbi record (26)recorded last year. Jill Duncan's streak of attending every baseball game was broken on Thursday. Apparently Mrs Duncan thought the game was at Metrolina and traveled diligently down to Indian Trail. She called and apologized for her error asking for grace and mercy. The Parents Kangaroo Court will call a special counsel meeting during the Saturday cookout to consider her plea and to possibly award her the record with an asterisk. All parents are encouraged to wear their mopheads for this special court meeting.
Mon 4/28 Conference Touney-Northside A 4:30 W 5-4

We Win!
Luke Laplant leads the Lions to their first MAC tournament victory in the history of the young program. Laplant recorded 4 hits including a solo shot in the first inning while recording 2 RBI. Luke also closed out the game on the mound allowing no runs in the last 3 innings to lower his team low ERA at .231. Michael MacDermott started impressively for the Lions on the hill and scattered 5 hits and 3 earned runs over four innings. Leo Barcley picked up two singles, with Tyler Andrews contributing two hits along with great defense, throwing out a runner going to third base sealing the victory for the Lions. Notables: With 2 RBI in today's game, Laplant ties David Batten for most by a Lions player in a season with 26. Laplant is one hit shy of tying Travis Jones record of 27 hits in a season. Tyler Andrews is 4 hits shy of the record. Tournament semifinal is scheduled for Thursday at 2 pm at Cannon School in Concord. Grillout will be on Saturday right after the game. Christine MacDermott, Ellen Palmer and Jill Duncan are leading the charge. Special called session of the Kangaroo Court will be held at the Cookout. Please bring your mopheads and your frivilous charges against your fellow parents to raise money for the coaches gifts this season. More info coming this week. End of Season Party info coming soon. Saturday's cookout is simply a warmup.

Tue 4/29 Conference Tourney Semifinal vs Westminster Catawba A 2:00 W 12-2

#6 Seeded Lions in MAC Finals
The CDS Lions Baseball Team continues to make history by defeating Westminster Catawba in the MAC semifinals today in Concord. The game start was delayed 1 hour due to excessive smokies stopping unsuspecting umpires on I85. While keeping the Indian batters off balance all game,Yates Duncan allowed the visitors their only two runs between the 2nd and 3rd innings. Bolstered by Westminster Catawba booting the ball 4 times in the third, the Cinderella team of the tournament scored a team record of 8 runs against a crafty lefthander Ferguson, to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Yates Duncan held Westminster scoreless the rest of the way allowing only one hit the last two innings. Notables: The Lions wrapped up their first mercy rule win in their short life in the MAC conference while scoring three runs in the 4th inning and adding the final run in the 5th inning. The defense remained solid only committing one error. The Lions collected 12 hits in 5 innings. The demise of Westminster Catawba was found clearly in the 8 errors committed in the field. Yates Duncan recorded his first complete game of the season and first win this spring. Josh Woodward hit a screaming line drive double for his first hit of the season. Collecting two hits a piece for the game were Michael MacDermott, Duncan Palmer, Luke Laplant and Troy Welty. Tyler Andrews broke the mark of Plate Apperances for a season (74). Cherie Clark continues to throw her body in the way of wayward balls hit while minding her own business. Mrs Clark has several bruises to show for her courage and undenied reputation for taking one for the team. *Note: Gold Glove Team Mom was out of pocket talking on cell phone when Mrs Clark was plunked in the back. The Kangaroo Court will take up this matter on Saturday. Congratulations to Luke Laplant, who was named to the 2008 MAC All Conference Team between games of the semifinal matchups-with 9 homeruns and a batting average in the 400's, Luke continues to be amongst the batting leaders in the Charlotte metro area. Christine MacDermott not only was an outstanding official scorer for the game this afternoon, we hope she fared just as well with the school board this evening(wink, wink, dip, dip, I mean nudge nudge). With two hits in the game, Luke Laplant supplanted Travis Jones as the all time season hits leader (28).Sadly, the only confectionaries offered up were from a concessionaire working the bleachers. Delightful as they were, nothing beats a good batch of baked goods from the kitchens of Palmer and the Bread Basket. Both Joe Andrews and Jim Bullard were seen taking business calls during todays game. Fines will surely be forthcoming Saturday. This game report was brought to you in part by your local area "Cookout" hamburger joint. We thank Mister Duncan for his treat to dinner at the Concord Mills Cookout.
