CLASS OF 2010
COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS FROM AUGUST TO APRIL
Notes from senior mtg on 8-28-09: HM
The following information was given to all seniors at a lunch meeting that I had with them on August 28th. They have a hard copy of the information below. Parents, mark your calendar for Thursday, Sept. 24 at 6:30, for the College Information night for juniors and seniors at their parents!-- Thank you, Miss Mills
If you have not formed a list of schools and are still trying to figure out where you want to apply, use the following websites to help jumpstart you: www.ctcl.org, www.naccap.org, www.collegeprowler.com, or www.princetonreview.com, www.christiancollegementor.org
Your calendar should include:Test dates, registration deadlines, admission deadlines, college fairs, and other scholarship deadlines. You should also include if and when the college counselors are visiting CDS.
Attend college fairs, especially the ones in our media center. For large fairs have labels ready with your name, date of graduation, GPA, test scores (optional) and any interests. Review your list of colleges/universities and be sure that you have safety, match and reach schools. Be familiar with the school-specific requirements/expectations. For example, do you need to take any SAT IIs in order to apply to your college or university.
Be sure that you have checked the respective schools’ websites for graduation/admission requirements. Register with those schools, and get your user names and passwords. Write these down in one place.
Prep and register for SAT and/or ACT tests. Be sure to have them sent to CDS. Our school code is 342532. www.actstudent.org www.collegeboard.com
Review applications and determine which essays you are going to answer. Start early and edit often. Remember that this should be YOUR BEST WRITING. Have a few people proof them. Request SAT and ACT scores to be sent to colleges and universities from The College Board and ACT respectively. Proof and re-proof your application before you submit them. Save them prior to submission. Request high school transcript, recommendations, and resume to be sent from high school guidance office. You are to request this two weeks in advance of when you need them sent. We are very busy too. Continue to research various scholarship opportunities. Parents are often calling me to find scholarships for their children. You are responsible for researching this information. The best use of your time is to check the colleges & universities to which you are applying first; second, check local organizations or your parents’ workplace; and third, use websites like schoolsoup.com or scholarships.com or petersons.com or fastweb.com. There are HPSP scholarships that may be applicable; check out www.goarmy.com/amedd/hpsp.jsp Several companies like Papa John’s, Burger King, Best Buy, Target, Duke Energy, Harris Teeter, Chic-Fil-A, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Toyota offer scholarships as well.
***If you are a student-athlete, be sure that you are registered with the NCAA eligibility center and that you have made appropriate contact with coaching staffs. Be persistent and inquisitive with the admission counselor and/or coaching staff with which you are communicating. Keep your current coach in the loop and remember to pick a school where you will be satisfied with or without participation in athletics. https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common/
